GPF Feedback: Thailand expeditions I am pleased to inform you that GPF have agreed to allocate you funds towards your expedition to Thailand. I trust you have a safe and successful trip. The committee has asked me to convey their disappointment at the quality of the application and supporting documents. The lack of detail in the application made judgement quite difficult and a better application would have allowed a higher allocation to be awarded
GPF2023b-002Benarat 2024Tim Allen£4500
GPF Feedback: Benarat I am pleased to inform you that GPF have agreed to allocate you funds towards your expedition to Mulu. I trust you have a safe and successful trip. The committee has asked me to convey their appreciation of the quality of the application and supporting documents and hence we awarded the highest value to a trip for some considerable years. The only negative comments at all on an application which was very well received was the lack of anyone under 30 on the team and a lack of local involvement

GPF2020b-001Mulu Caves 2021Andrew Eavis£3000
GPF Feedback: On behalf of GPF I am writing to you to give you feedback on your application for Mulu Caves 2021. GPF agreed with the assessment of MCP that this was a strong expedition , and the team has a good track record of science, exploration and reporting back. The expedition was awarded 3,000 , 500 of which is retained pending feedback at the end of the expedition.
Winter 2020
GPF2020a-002Puncak Jaya 2020Fleur Loveridge£17501
GPF Feedback: This expedition is based at high altitudes in an area that is little known to cavers, and so is a really exciting proposition with the potential to explore some of the highest caves in the world.. Its good to see this is a longer duration trip than previously, though given the ambitious nature and remote location. A good strong team with a blend of youth and experience which should be capable of addressing the physical, technical and logistical challenges. Costs are relatively eye-watering, although this is clearly heavily influenced by the necessary logistical support, which the team's prior experience has indicated as being a necessary investment. This is definitely one of the more ambitious and exciting expeditions that has been submitted to GPF over the last 10 years.
GPF2020a-003Izvor Licanke Cave Diving Expedition 2020Christine Grosart£400
GPF Feedback: An exciting expedition with much further potential for exploration. Quite technical diving which is always well published and recorded visually as a complete package. A fairly costly trip, not so much in terms of travel, but in terms of equipment, gas etc but is entirely necessary. It is a very short duration expedition and potentially could more be done with longer in the field.
Summer 2019
GPF2019b-001Mulu Caves 2020Tim Allen£750
GPF Feedback: The committee felt that the application was lacking in a lot of detail, with the objectives very basic. Rather than supplying the required information, a reference to the website was given. While this may contain a wealth of information about Mulu expeditions, it requires each of the GPF committee members to search for themselves. This information should be provided in the application. The expedition has a strong team but only 4 out of 14 members are under 35 years which is a great shame considering the wealth of experience other younger cavers could learn from. The expedition will no doubt have some good discoveries, which will be well documented.
GPF2019b-003Northern Thailand 2019Emma Porter£3001
GPF Feedback: Due to Chinese visa problems occurring the Napo China 2019 expedition, ultimately resulting in the withdraw of this expedition, the GPF committee agreed that on submission of a new application, with objectives, personnel and expenditure, GPF would allocate funds to this application. At short notice this application has been done and is well presented with clear objectives' personnel and finance. The team will hopefully still have some good expedition caving to go at despite the change of location at the last minute. An Alex Pitcher award was also awarded and GPF hope that Josh will enjoy his first expedition despite all the initial set backs.
Winter 2019
GPF2019a-001Croatia Cave Diving Expedition 2019 (Izvor Licanke)Christine Grosart£350
GPF Feedback: Good team returning to a diving project started last year. Results from the last expedition require even more sophisticated diving equipment and capable divers. Hopefully the divers can borrow rather than buy a number of scooters to reduce the cost of the expedition. Previous years exploration well documented and publicised. Application well presented and on time this year 🙂 In a drive by GPF to see more science being conducted in expeditions, the committee would love to see some more explanation of the hydrological/geomorphological context of this cave in the wider region. GPF look forward to seeing this year’s results. Applied for Mount Everest funding, but sadly not successful. GPF has had a request from a Dr Nathan Smith, a Research Associate at Manchester University for help with his research into the understanding of the post-expedition experience, caving expeditions being of particular interest. GPF would like to support this research and expedition leaders are encouraged to ask their participating members to fill out a questionnaire form on return from their expedition. More information about his research can be obtained by emailing him directly at Nathan.smith@manchester.ac.uk . The questionnaire can be found at https://apps.mhs.manchester.ac.uk/surveys//TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=llKI38l5H
GPF2019a-003Mulu 19Ben Kent (co-leader)£2001
GPF Feedback: An expedition primarily to try and connect a number of known caves into the Clearwater cave system and extend its length, with some additional bolt climbing objectives. Some younger members but mainly over 35 years, possibly reflected by the cost of the expedition. Good application, highlighting the participation of Hazel Barton in an initial recce into the microbiology of the area, a great shame more younger people aren't involved to benefit from her scientific knowledge. Applied and received good support from the Mount Everest Foundation as well as help from Malaysian Airlines, the grant award from GPF reflecting this allowing monies to be allocated elsewhere. GPF2019a-004Overlooked Armenia Alex Ritchie£300
GPF Feedback: Small (little known - relatively young by normal standards) team going to recce a new area. The team has done their home work (as shown by a good application), both identifying the area they want to look at as well as communicating with the local cavers (the head of the Armenian Speleological Centre - participating in the expedition). The team leader has a good understanding of caves and their development. Hopefully the results will be fruitful, (with possible hydrological and biological studies) which will warrant an full scale expedition next year. GPF2019a-005Albania Kelmend Jon Pemberton£200
GPF Feedback: A return to previously visited area on several occasions. An exceptionally poor application making judgement on objectives, expedition costs, personnel etc very difficult. Previous feedback and reports also could be more precise, documenting findings etc in a more scientific way. It is hoped this year things will change -grant allocation reflects this unsatisfactory application and the hope that better documentation and science is undertaken during this year’s application. GPF2019a-007Dachstein ExpeditionJoel Corrigan£1200
GPF Feedback: Longstanding project from a dedicated and tenacious team with a long record of exploration. Fantastic to see a GPF application from the expedition. Achieved a long sought-after goal of connecting the Dachstein plateau to the Hirlatz system making a 1560m deep cave. Traditionally this expo has had large numbers of students and younger cavers though it is led and organised by cavers who have been involved for many years. Application a bit lacking of young members attending, but the committee appreciate the problem of students unwilling to commit to the Exped at this early stage. The expedition could benefit from some more documentation and publications especially considering the great surveying that is being undertaken, possibly with a bit of scientific explanation of the hydrology of the area. This grant allocation has been loaded to help buy a Cave link system (£1000 - earmarked by GPF for one unit) as the caves in the region can flash flood with freak thunderstorms and deep camping is generally undertaken. It is requested that collaboration with other expeditions (such as the CUCC - also subject to this benefit) to share units. It is also hoped that the units will be made available to other UK Expeds if not being used by the Dachstein team. GPF2019a-008Anglo-Malaysian Mulu Caves October 2019Frank Pearson£500
GPF Feedback: 2nd expedition to Mulu to continue exploration of a different part of the national park Whiterock, but not subject to the same MEF grant as GPF2019a-001. Good application but objectives a bit lost in historical prose. Team members indicated to being a mixture of young and old, some of which know the area well; the younger members will definitely benefit from the older experience. Documentation from the group has always been very good and hopefully will continue to include some scientific studies. GPF has had a request from a Dr Nathan Smith, a Research Associate at Manchester University for help with his research into the understanding of the post-expedition experience, caving expeditions being of particular interest. GPF2019a-009Redcoats and Rednecks Tennessee ExpeditionRostam Namaghi£600
GPF Feedback: After an initial small man recce building good relationship with the local US cavers, they are return to this caving area with a larger team. Good application with clear objectives (including cave diving) focused on high quality surveying. Hopefully this might be extended to include other forms of cave science such as biology, hydrology etc. This expedition will be a good training ground for the less experienced younger cavers participating, who hopefully will go onto a more demanding expedition. GPF are looking forward to the expedition report. GPF has had a request from a Dr Nathan Smith, a Research Associate at Manchester University for help with his research into the understanding of the post-expedition experience, caving expeditions being of particular interest. GPF2019a-010Dark side of the moonJames Wilson£10002
GPF Feedback: Established expedition with good reputation for documentation, excellent training for cavers new to expedition. Good prospects for significant new finds. This year however, the team is very young with the oldest member being 25years age, but should be excellent training for cavers new to expedition. 2 x Pitcher applicants appear the epitome of the target audience and should be funded accordingly. Good use of technology for cave exploration, with cave-link, paperless surveying and drones, hopefully this will be extended into conducting more cave science. GPF has had a request from a Dr Nathan Smith, a Research Associate at Manchester University for help with his research into the understanding of the post-expedition experience, caving expeditions being of particular interest. GPF2019a-011CUCC Austria Expedition 2019Thomas Crossley£14001
GPF Feedback: Another longstanding project with a strong, tenacious team and an excellent record of achievements over time. Good application but always left to the last minute, causing a flurry of email to GPF with perceivable problems with the application system - the team would benefit considerably by allowing more time for the application process. Application shows a notably strong emphasis on surveying and recording, with large numbers of students and younger cavers (the expedition being led by a student caver), but with a number of older members attending, giving no doubt a great training ground for the younger cavers. Good prospects for significant new finds in the system including deep leads involving camping but also with surface prospecting and easier, shallower caves. This grant allocation has also been loaded to help buy a Cave link system (£1000 - ear marked by GPF for one unit) in an identical way to the Dachstein Expedition as the caves in the region can flash flood with freak thunderstorms and deep camping is generally undertaken. It is requested that collaboration with other expeditions (such as the Dachstein - also subject to this benefit) to share units. It is also hoped that the units will be made available to other UK expeds if not being used by the CUCC Team. Summer 2018
GPF2018b-001Croatia Cave Diving Expedition 2018Christine Grosart£200
GPF Feedback: The application was received too late for consideration in the GPF spring meeting, and thus was considered at the GPF Autumn meeting, the expedition having already departed and returned. Due to the extenuating circumstances relating to the late application and it also being the applicants first GPF application, the GPF committee decided to consider this application, but in so doing limit the award given. The application was well filled out and presented, and the aims of the expedition well were clearly laid out. The report given and the presentation given at Hidden Earth 2018 indicated the success of this diving expedition, and its continuation next year. We look forward to another application next year, hopefully before the deadline closes.
GPF2018b-002Houping Winter 2018Laura Benn£500
GPF Feedback: An area well visited by British cavers, but with good potential for further discoveries. Small-ish team, but with a good mix of experience and younger members. Appears to have clear goals, although a degree of confusion over how some of the objectives fit in with the overview. Hopefully will add significantly to the overall knowledge of the area and we look forward to seeing the results in due course.
GPF2018b-003Junee-Florentine 2018Fleur Loveridge£400
GPF Feedback: A large multi national team going to an area that has seen a lot of exploration, but could yield interesting results and find extensions to the current master cave system. The application lacked specific objectives / caves / areas within the JE Florentine valley that the expedition would be targeting. Be interesting to see how successful the expedition is in finding new cave passage.
Winter 2018
GPF2018a-001Matienzo 2018 (Matienzo Cave Project)Philip Papard£500
GPF Feedback: Application very well presented. As usual a solid application with lots of exciting projects on the go. Open to all and lots of younger people generally go. A great training ground for young talent which is what is needed.
GPF2018a-002Kaokoland 2018Mark Tringham£250
GPF Feedback: Interesting expedition to a fairly remote part of Namibia. The team is going back after further work by local groups have identified the presence of more caves. All the participants are over 45. A great shame the group could not great the space for a younger member possibly getting into geology or cave science as would be a great opportunity. Do any participants have expertise in archaeology? If not is there a danger of damage to rare and fragile sites given the importance of this area to studies of human evolution?
GPF2018a-003Tresviso 2018Phil Walker£7002
GPF Feedback: Has grown in numbers significantly this expedition, may be a bit to big but will be interesting how it runs. Some great leads particularly the 2nd sump in Marniosa & death race. Good documentation with a report each year and is now this information is starting to put all the data into a GIS system. Great to see lots of students going on this expedition. Hope it goes well. Very basic details on the justification of the Alex Pitcher nominations, need to be more detailed next application
GPF2018a-004Puncak Jaya Expedition to West PapuaPete Talling£800
GPF Feedback: Really exciting new area with a lot of potential. An expensive trip which is clearly putting off younger cavers. Good to have contacted trekking company and to have known resurgence sites to visit. Surprising that it is so short (only 10 days in the field).
GPF2018a-005ASUL 2018Kostas Trimmis£350
GPF Feedback: Fairly small expo to Greece, returning to same area as in 2017. Application well filled out but no references or website referred to. Student-led and including cavers with little expo experience plus scientific focus which is great to see. The committee would like to see an article for Caves and Karst Science and a general publication.
GPF2018a-006KLIC GLOBIN -- CALL FROM THE DEPTHS -- Migovec 2018Arun Paul£7002
GPF Feedback: Well established expedition with reliable results and a strong student presence. A suitable selection of goals for all abilities in fairly deep and serious alpine karst. A slight departure from the previous expeditions in that surprisingly all the attendants are under 30 and thus less experience than previous years. Hopefully the expedition will still maintain the well run and documented expeditions that have previously been run.
GPF2018a-007Maaras 2018Malcolm Foyle£3501
GPF Feedback: The application appears a little rushed and could have done with proof-reading! Fairly ambitious goals - little details about previous trips by this team to the area and no references provided so hard to assess what risks are for this trip. Sadly the crew is fairly old and would be good that a few more younger members were recruited to benefit from the older team members.
GPF2018a-008EAst GREenland 18 (EAGRE 18)Gina Moseley£300
GPF Feedback: Application very well presented. The approach by boat is novel and interesting in terms of reducing carbon footprint, and likewise the engagement with the local population is admirable. Hopefully the scientific finding of this expedition will be interesting. Only limited funding given due to substantial funding by other bodies.
GPF2018a-009Cambridge University Caving Club Austria Expedition 2018Ruairidh Macleod£7002
GPF Feedback: Good expeditions with a great combination of experience and younger students now not just from CUCC but also other universities. Provides an ideal training ground, with the expedition having both easy and harder caving leads. Hopefully a report and GPF feedback will be a bit more punctual than last year.
Summer 2017
GPF2017b-001Matienzo 2017Philip Papard£400
GPF Feedback: Well established repeat expedition with a solid track record of exploration and documentation. The hydrological project sounds very interesting. It is a great shame that more younger members are not currently signed up as the experience they would gain would be invaluable (especially the water tracing techniques). Hopefully the leaders will recruit some younger members before the expeditions take place.
GPF2017b-002SMCC Thailand 2018Paul Dummer£300
GPF Feedback: Experienced expedition team working consistently over a period of time with good results and reporting.Different area already recce'd with established potential. Another project worthy of continued GPF support at a decent level. The application lacked a little detail in places - for the majority of participants their experience has been written as "experienced expedition caver", no attachments etc to support the application, the detailed description ends mid sentence suggesting little time was spent on it or it wasn't checked before sending. The committee hope this will be addressed in subsequent applications.
GPF2017b-003Svalbard 2018 - Austre BroggerbreenJayne Kamintzis£100
GPF Feedback: Interesting and well filled out application with a good science basis - driven by a PhD project. The cave map supplied is basic to the point of being meaningless. Hopefully a more detailed original survey is available, as comparing new data against the one supplied will not give very scientific results. It would have been nice to see the 3D image of their first visit/scan. While a good science project in Ice caves, the project was only token support due to very small team and BCRA funding (which has been applied for) is thought more appropriate.
GPF2017b-004Pena Colorada 2018Chris Jewell£1000
GPF Feedback: A good application, good (multi national) team with a varied age range but generally fairly young participants. The leader has organized a number of expeditions to this area and this one is to a very interesting cave and may be the key to the system. Significant technical challenge in a remote location - the standout expedition of this round and has been funded accordingly.
GPF2017b-005Kyrgyzstan 17Malcolm Foyle£200
GPF Feedback: Expedition to a new area by a group new to GPF, but who are known to regularly go on expedition to Greece several times a year. An Interesting project in a new and little-known location. The costs of getting to Kyrgyzstan are high and may have possibly warranted longer time in the field. It is however a recce and the committee will be very interested in seeing the results. Hopefully this will lead to a follow up expedition if initial results are positive.
Winter 2017
GPF2017a-001Huautla Resurgence 2017Chris Jewell£500
GPF Feedback: Well prepared and exciting technical project to a longstanding objective with potential for significant discoveries. It will be very interesting to see the results of the secondary objective.
GPF2017a-002ASULKostas Trimmis£500
GPF Feedback: The expedition seems reasonably well organised; application reasonably researched and presented from a young not well known team. Hope the trip provides some good discoveries which are documented and published in the appropriate caving media.
GPF2017a-003Mulu Caves 2017Andy Eavis£100
GPF Feedback: A large team of generally old veterans doing a mixture of remote and easy exploration. No doubt the results will be good, but a great shame more young people are not encouraged to go on this expedition to learn form the great experience present. It is an expensive place to go and channelling grant money to some younger members might increase their numbers.
GPF2017a-004Thailand Krabi Family expeditionImogen Furlong£600
GPF Feedback: Interesting concept of "a family expedition", but, as seems to have been proven by last years trip, may be a good combination of allowing cavers with young families to still do expeditions whilst also making it fun for the children who will be the next generation of cavers. Expedition seems well organised with firm objectives. One negative comment - the application (specifically the personnel section) was incompletely filled in and needs to be improved for future applications.
GPF2017a-005Pozo Azul - 2017Jason Mallinson£850
GPF Feedback: Another crack at Pozo Azul, pushing a system that is at the forefront of cave diving in the world. Flying the flag for British caving. Will be well planned and executed. We look forward to seeing the results.
GPF2017a-006Ario Caves Project 2017Mike Bottomley£8002
GPF Feedback: A large team with good exploration experience (the use "extensive caving experience" in peoples resume is a bit over done). There are a reasonable number of younger people who will benefit from the experience, but very few students going to benefit from a good expedition. Nice to see the Ario project having a major revival.
GPF2017a-007Tresviso 2017Phil Walker£5001
GPF Feedback: Some realistic although potentially quite tough objectives for this expedition, especially considering the expedition is only two weeks. The team chosen however seems suitable for the task with plenty of hard Dachstein veteran experience. Look forward to seeing the results.
GPF2017a-008Cambridge University Caving Club Austria Expedition 2016 (CUCC)Elaine Oliver£9002
GPF Feedback: A well-established expedition returning to continue exploration of a large system that they have systematically explored over many years. Good chance of success. Lots of students from several different clubs attending this as their first ever expedition. This will provide excellent expedition training as well as allowing students who have only previously only caved within their own clubs to cave with other students and other more experienced cavers.
Summer 2016
GPF2016b-001Shan Plateau 2016-17Pete Talling£700
GPF Feedback: A good strong team returning to a previously visited area. Hope the permissions get easier allowing longer trips underground. The committee wondered if there was any scope for younger members partake, improving their overseas expedition knowledge and skill. While the committee understands the reason to publish the results on social media, as part of the grant conditions the required feedback (including a presentation at Hidden Earth or an article in descent) is given. The committee would also encourage other reports etc to be also published in the normal caving channels (not just social media).
Winter 2016
GPF2016a-001SUSS go Pester SerbiaJack Dewison£10001
GPF Feedback: Good to see a relative young group of cavers going, with some old experience people going. Application lacked a bit of detail on previous work done in the area and the relationship with the local caving groups, permissions required. Both referees were unavailable for comment which was disappointing. The required answers to addition information was provided by other SUSS members. Hopefully it will be a great learning experience for all with some great new caves found. Watch out for the bombs! (Seriously) General Note: The committee would also like applicants to note that many of the applications were submitted very close to the submission deadline. Some of the applications lacked the pertinent/ detail required, and the committee felt that more time and care would have benefited some of these applications. The application process is open for over 5 months before the deadline, with the ability to save and re edit applications prior to final submission. We suggest applicants take advantage of this in the future

GPF Feedback: Looks a very exciting follow up expedition in a remote area, with a relatively young team. Funding limited due to low number of UK members (5 out of 16). Looking forward to the report. GPF are surprised at the daily cost of the fixer, and the decision to use charter flight from Brisbane. In view of the projected budget short fall these decisions might be worth reviewing.
GPF2015b-004China Caves- Doshan 2015Mark Richardson£5752
GPF Feedback: Looks like a well organised follow up expedition, which has a large number of young caves supported by a few old experienced hands. Glad to see some Alex Pitcher applicants being included.

GPF Feedback: Application GPF2014a-006, after discussion with the Referees, concern was raised about the small number of participants and their relatively low experience (particularly with Ice work and glacial experience). It was decided that the Alex Pitcher awards will be given, but a strong recommendation that the 1st leg of the proposed trip until after they have gained more experience from the legs 2&3 where they will be joining a larger expedition.
